Explore the Rock!
Our popular outdoor summer program—Explore the Rock—returns summer 2020. Kodiak students entering Grades 6–12 are invited to join in weekly outdoor activities designed to promote physical activity while teaching valuable social and survival skills.
Local program leaders and guest presenters help lead adventures and teach lessons including first aid, Bear Safety, camp cooking and packing, geocaching, and teamwork. Each week’s event is a complete adventure; kids can participate in any—or all—of the weeks, but they will need to register before they show up. Registration forms will be made available before the start of the summer program.
What to Expect
Explore the Rock is more than an opportunity for teens to go hiking; Explore the Rock facilitates friendships and builds social skills in our youth. This program provides an opportunity for adventure and wellness for youth living in Kodiak alongside staff and volunteers who care. Trips usually take around five hours, and are led by KANA staff and adult volunteers.
Hike locations and topics will be listed at the start of the summer but are subject to change due to trail maintenance or weather. Confirmed hike locations will be announced each week via email for those who have registered, and also posted to the Explore the Rock Facebook page.

Baranof Park is the best place for kids to begin and end their weeks this summer. KANA and the City of Kodiak Parks & Recreation are teaming up to host group activities on Monday and Friday afternoons all summer. Spikeball, ultimate frisbee, flag football, basketball and soccer are just some of the fun options to choose from. We also have cool rainy day activities that will take place under the ice rink shelter.
Activity Afternoons at Baranof Park provides an inclusive environment for students of all ages and for all physical abilities. Anyone under 18 years of age is welcome!
The program runs from June through August, with a break in activities the week of July 4th. This is a drop-in event; participants may attend as many or as few days as they wish. However, we do ask that everyone arrive on time and stay the duration of each event.
Registration will be made available before the start of the summer. Stay tuned for updated information!
