Food Sovereignty Open Forum

May 23, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

KANA will host an open forum on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, to discuss the food ecosystem in Kodiak and its island communities. Discussions will be facilitated by food systems analyst, Rachael Miller.

The public is invited to share views on Kodiak’s food supply and access to communities. Attendees will address: what does the concept of “food sovereignty” mean to them; where and how do Kodiak residents/businesses currently source their food; what changes would they like to see; and what food initiatives/projects are happening in other communities. This is an opportunity to voice concerns and highlight opportunities for future food-related projects.

Communities around the country are regaining control of their food supply. “Food sovereignty” is a concept that people have a right to define their own food systems. Food sovereignty carries different meaning from community to community; culture, climate, geography, natural resources, and other factors determine what each can produce and access. It is often based on self-sufficient, sustainable systems, and can include traditional practices of growing, gathering, hunting, and fishing, but may also integrate affordable distribution of healthful foods with modern methods.

This event is part of a project funded by the First Nations Development Institute, culminating into a Food Sovereignty Assessment Report later this summer.

Forum facilitator Rachael Miller is a researcher and professor studying food systems and creative business models. She teaches marketing, entrepreneurship, and innovation in both the undergraduate and MBA programs at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage, Alaska.
